FAQs
When the return card is placed, the direction of play changes. Of course this makes little sense when playing in pairs. Also the assumption that the opponent then misses is wrong. The return card has the same function as a number card. It can be discarded and then it is the opponent’s turn again.
No, the player does not necessarily have to discard a card. In the official rules it says:
„The players have the option not to discard a discardable card“
This may be appropriate for strategic reasons.
Here is an example:
On the discard pile there is a red 7. In my hand I hold a blue 7 and green 8. I know that my next player only holds a blue card in his hand, because he wished for blue before. In this case it is advisable not to discard the blue 7 and to draw a card instead.
If a player places a +2 card as the last card, he has won the game. Even if the next player could also place a +2 or +4 colour card. The game ends when the last card is placed. The next player should not answer a +2 card with another +2 card during the game, because there is always the obligation to draw cards.
The exception is the UNO variant „Cumulate“. If this is used, +2 and +4 cards can be extended. Here the following applies: +2 cards can only be extended with +2 cards and the same applies to +4 colour cards. These may not be combined. The extension of a +2 card with a +4 colour choice card is not allowed when „Cumulate“ is used.
Basically, you can only take one card at a time. Even if you have the same card twice, you can only discard one of them.
However, there are special UNO variants that are often used. With the variant „double“ it is allowed to put identical cards together.
According to the official rules of the game, only the winner of the game receives the points of the other players at the end of a game round. These are credited to him as plus points. The first player to reach 500 points wins the game. Since only one player can win each round, only one player will receive 500 points.
However, it is also usual to count the points of your own hand as minus points. The game ends automatically, just as a player reaches the 300 or 500 points mark (this is determined in advance). The player with the fewest (minus) points has now won the game. All other games are ranked according to their score.
The short answer is no.
If the previous player places a +4 colour choice card or draw four colour choice card, the player in turn must immediately take 4 cards into his hand. If the previous player has a +2 card or a +4 colour card in his hand, he is not allowed to lay it.
Deviating rules must be established as a house rule in advance of the game.
Yes, the player may place them even if he has the desired colour of the previous player in his hand.
If the player only has one action card left in his hand and discards it in his last turn, the game is over. It does not matter which action card (colour choice card, draw four colour choice card, etc.). The action of this card is no longer performed and the points are counted.
Exceptions:
The players decide on different rules in advance (house rules). These must be decided before the start of the game and all players must then abide by them.
Special UNO versions have different rules in the game instructions when the last card is played. These should be read up beforehand.
